Žilina Region

The Žilinský ( Žilina Region ) is an administrative region in northern Slovakia.

Geography

The Kraj has an area of ​​6809 km ² and 689 601 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) and is located in the north of Slovakia. The mountainous landscape is dominated by the Western Carpathians and different valleys; there are no lowlands here. In the northwest there are parts of the White Carpathians and the Javorník Mountains that form the border with Moravia. In the region of Jablunkapasses the triangle Slovakia - Czech Republic - Poland Beskid start ( Moravian- Silesian Beskydy ), which are mostly on the border with Poland. On the Slovak side, they are operated as Slovenské Beskydy. In the area of Žilina and its boiler Žilinská kotlina the Small Fatra, which is divided by a transverse valley of the Waag is located. The traditional landscape Turz occupied by the Turčianska kotlina ( Turz boiler ). To the east and northeast of it lie the Great Fatra and another transverse valley of the Waag. Other mountains in the eastern part of the Krajs are the Orava Magura, Chočské Hills, the Western Tatras and the Low Tatras; between the last two mentioned is in the countryside Liptau the large sub- Tatra boiler.

The most important river of Krajs is the Waag, which crosses it from east to west. Larger tributaries are the Arwa, Turcianska, Kysuca and Rajčanka. There are two major reservoirs in the area: the Liptauer reservoir ( Liptovská Mara ) at the Waag in Liptovsky Mikulas and the Orava reservoir at Tvrdošín. The highest mountain is the Bystrá in the West Tatras ( 2248 m nm); the lowest point is at the Waag in Predmier (301 m nm).

Four National Parks are located entirely or partially in Kraj: Malá Fatra ( Lesser Fatra ), Velka Fatra ( Great Fatra ), Low Tatras ( NAPANT, Low Tatras ) and the Tatranský Národný park ( TANAP, Tatra National Park ). In addition, three areas are managed as conservation areas: Horna Orava, Kysuce and Strážovské hills.

Administratively borders of the territory to the Polish Silesia and Malopolska province in the north, Prešov Region in the east, Banskobystrický kraj in the south, Trenčín Region in the southwest as well as the Czech and Moravian-Silesian Zlín Region in the northwest.

Population

The population density is 102/km ², slightly lower than the Slovak average ( 110/km ²). Capital is Žilina ( Žilina ), other major cities are Martin, Ružomberok (Rosenberg ) and Liptovsky Mikulas ( Liptau- Saint Nicholas ). Overall, the Regional Association of 315 municipalities, 18 cities. The Slovaks form, according to the 2001 census 97.5 % of the population. The Czechs have a share of 0.9%.

After religion, the Roman Catholic Church is the most represented with 75.5 %; the second place is the Evangelical Church AB with 10.5%. A tenth of the population identified themselves as atheists.
