Zimnicea
Zimnicea (formerly Simnitza ) is a small town in the Romanian county Teleorman on the border with Bulgaria.
Geographical Location
Zimnicea is the southernmost city in Romania. It is located around 2 km north of the Danube, opposite of Svishtov.
History
Near Zimnicea is the oldest Geto - Dacian fortress of the Great Wallachia ( 5th to 6th century BC). The place is an archaeological site today.
In the Russian - Ottoman war (1877-1878), the Russian main army went in Zimnicea over the Danube and sales after a hard fight the weak Turkish army.
In March 1977, 80 % of the city were destroyed by a major earthquake. In subsequent years, it was rebuilt.
