( 11775 ) Koehler is an asteroid of the inner main belt, which was discovered on 16 October 1977 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten couple and Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld. The discovery happened at the 3rd trojan screening, in which the 120 - cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar Observatory recorded by Tom Gehrels field plates at Leiden University were screened, 17 years after the beginning of the Palomar - Leiden Surveys.

The asteroid was named on 1 May 2003 by the German biologist Georges JF Köhler ( 1946-1995 ). Köhler received 1984 Niels Kaj Jerne, together with César Milstein and the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine " for theories concerning the specificity in development and control of the immune system and for the discovery of the principle for production of monoclonal antibodies ". After Niels Kaj Jerne, the asteroid of the outer main belt ( 11774 ) Jerne was named on the same day, according to César Milstein also on 1 May 2003, the asteroid of the outer main belt ( 11776 ) Milstein. The comet C/1977 R1 ( Kohler ), however, bears the name of its discoverer, the California astronomer Merlin Kohler.
