1590 Neulengbach earthquake

On September 15, 1590 shook just before midnight south of Neulengbach, Lower Austria the earth. It was the heaviest known earthquake, the Vienna and Lower Austria have ever suffered. The quake is estimated at magnitude 6.0, according to Richter scale, the catastrophe was heralded in advance with slight tremors on. According to reports, it was noticeable even from Saxony to Transylvania, in nearly 300 km away Silesian Frankenstein was drawing a clock tower, now known as the Leaning Tower of Frankenstein.

This earthquake was relevant for numerous discussions about the construction of the nuclear power plant Zwentendorf, located nearby and was therefore investigated in more detail.

Damage

Serious damage and casualties were reported from about 50 miles radius:

  • In Vienna, the earthquake caused severe damage in and pulled the most famous buildings affected. It brought down the towers of St. Michael's Church and the Scots Church a part of the church and damaged roofs. From Rotenthurm road, near the Griechenbeisl, reported " ... That the Gasthauß the bey of gold suns inputs / hostess / and jre sister / sampt seven Oberle -Indian merchants verschütt / the one that is found dead ."
  • A source reported that the quake in Zwentendorf "... the khürchen follows shattered and zerlittert that you may nit into it ... "
  • Many castles as Rappoltenkirchen and Unterthurm were severely damaged or even destroyed.
  • From the Charterhouse Wall Bach is narrated that the vaults and the roof collapsed riders, as large parts of the monastery buildings and the surrounding wall.
