179th Reserve Panzer Division (Wehrmacht)

The Division No. 179/Panzer-Division No 179 / 179th Reserve Panzer Division was a military major unit of the Wehrmacht.

Division history

The " Division 179" was set up in January 1940 in Weimar to guide the replacement troops in a part of the Military District IX. Here existed previously for this purpose already the Division No. 159, from which they took part. In April 1942 it was renamed the " Division No. 179 ( mot ) " and a year later in " Panzer Division 179". End of July 1943, another name change to " 179 Reserve - Panzer-Division " and the relocation to France, where she served as an occupation force. In May 1944, the Division was disbanded to form from it and the remnants of the shattered on the Eastern Front 16th Panzer Grenadier Division of the 116th Panzer Division. The Division participated in no major fighting part.
