The Showa Sanriku earthquake (Japanese昭和 三 陆 地震, Shōwa Sanriku jishin ) was an earthquake which is on March 2, 1933 (the Shōwa 8) 290 km east of Japan occurred. It was followed by a tsunami with a wave height to 28.7 m, which hit the Sanriku coast. In Japan, about 3,000 houses were completely destroyed and another 2,000 were damaged. The tsunami also causing minor damage in Hawaii, where in Napoopoo a wave height of 2.9 m was measured.
Similarly devastating earthquake at the same place were the Jogan - Sanriku earthquake 869, the Keicho - Sanriku earthquake in 1611, the Meiji- Sanriku earthquake in 1896 and the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011.
