1958 Rio de Janeiro train crash

The railway accident of Mangueira was a head-on collision of two commuter trains on March 4, 1958 in Mangueira, three kilometers from the center of Rio de Janeiro. 128 people died.

Accident

Due to an error signal drove on the same track one out of town traveling and a moving train into town the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil to each other. The clash took place under a highway bridge, where the two trains into each other pushed, wedged and piled the wrecks of cars together.

In addition to the 128 deaths there were 300 injured. This was the fourth rail accident in Brazil with more than 50 deaths in seven years. see:

The next day, stormed and destroyed applied relatives of the passengers of the train stations Mangueira and engenho de Dentro. Trying to ravage three other stations in the vicinity, was blocked by the police. The President of Brazil, Juscelino Kubitschek, dismissed after the accident investigation had found negligence in railway operation, three senior officials of the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil.
