The EFCB Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil was a historic railroad in Brazil, based in Rio de Janeiro. The railway company EFCB under the name Estrada de Ferro Dom Pedro II founded and renamed in 1889 in EFCB.

History

The railway company was in competition for the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina, which was founded around the same time. The heart of the EFCB was the EFCB - Linha do Centro. She led from the station Dom Pedro II in Rio de Janeiro, Serra das Araras up and was already completed to Barra do Pirai 1864. From here the line continued in the direction of Juiz de Fora (1875 ) and Minas Gerais. It was the plan today, Belo Horizonte past continue the line to the Rio São Francisco and then even further to lead to Belém in the state of Pará in the Amazon.

In fact, the railway construction arrived in Pirapora on the Rio São Francisco in 1910. However, the bridge was not used much over the river, after which the Independencia station was opened in 1922 across the river. A former railway siding of Ramal de Montes Claros - was the end point in the final stage of the railway line. The section, which should be carried beyond the river, was not further developed. It was called later Ramal de Pirapora. In the last stage of the 1922 EFCB was - Linha do Centro 1354 rail kilometers long.

From 16 March 1957, the entire organization of EFCB came under the control of speech Ferroviária Federal SA ( RFFSA ). As a consequence, many suburban rail systems were divided, belonging to at this time to EFCB. Above all, the non-profitable lines were closed or assigned to other lines. The EFCB - Linha do Centro was used in part by the trains running coming from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro (from Barra do Pirai ). But even this lucrative part of route became unprofitable by the construction of the highway DUTRA more and more, so that the total passenger traffic was completely stopped in 1998. In the area of Rio de Janeiro today operate suburban trains on the tracks of the former Linha do Centro of EFCB.
