1970 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship

The Volleyball Women's World Cup 1970 was held from 22 September to 2 October in Bulgaria instead. The Soviet Union won the title for the fourth time. The Games were held in Varna, Burgas, Sevlievo and Sofia.

Mode

The sixteen participants played in the first round in four groups of four. The top two teams from each group came in the final group with eight teams. The results were taken against direct competitors. The winner of this group became the new world champion. The other participants were playing in a second group of eight to the ranks of nine to sixteen.

Qualification

Bulgaria was as a host as well as set the four participants in the last World Cup. Additionally, the best six teams qualified to the European Championship in 1967 and the Masters of NORCECA and South America as well as two representatives from Asia. The last two starting places were awarded in a qualifying tournament with five participants.
