Background

Two new Formula 1 cars were at Brands Hatch first appearance. Among the first constructed under the direction of Frank Williams racing car, which carried the designation Politoys FX3 and was driven by Henri Pescarolo. Thus, the team of Frank Williams Racing Cars for the first time did not occur as a pure customer team. Another new car in the field was piloted by François Migault Connew PC1, whose first start of the race had to be postponed because of a defect.

In B.R.M. were added to the plan to bring up to five business car at the start. After the final departure of Helmut Marko for his two weeks earlier at the Grand Prix of France suffered eye injury Jackie Oliver was engaged as third driver alongside Jean -Pierre Beltoise and Peter Gethin for the British Grand Prix. We left it this weekend with these three vehicles.

Since Clay Regazzoni as the second Ferrari driver because of a broken arm still turned out, Mario Andretti denied a race in the U.S. and Nanni Galli had not been competitive at the French GP, they gave the Ferrari as a sports car driver under contract at Arturo Merzario the chance of his Formula 1 debut alongside regular driver Jacky Ickx. Galli then took back his place in the team Tecno.

Training

Jacky Ickx in the Ferrari conquered the pole position and shared with the Emerson Fittipaldi leading in the world championship standings on the front row. Peter Revson and Jackie Stewart qualified for the second row. With Tim giving and Jean -Pierre Beltoise in the third row a mixed starter box with six different cars resulted in the first six places.

Race

Ickx took advantage of his pole position to dictate Fittipaldi and the well started from the third row Beltoise lead. This was followed by Stewart, Revson, giving and Peterson, where Stewart was able to fight within the first few laps significantly forward. In the 25th round, he took second place by Fittipaldi. On lap 36, however, this could counter. Because Ickx in round 49 was forced to retire due to a problem with the oil pressure was from the previous duel for second place, a battle for the top, in which Fittipaldi could just say at the end to its counterparty.

Revson came to an unchallenged third place finish. All other drivers were lapped by the three podium placed at least once.

After Cevert was eliminated in round 61, Peterson was long on a seemingly secure fourth place until the penultimate lap in the " Paddock Hill " curve its engine burst. He lost control of his car and collided with parked vehicles along the course of Cevert and Graham Hill, who were both previously retired at this point because of a driving error. He was still classified seventh because of its traveled distance of 75 rounds. Chris Amon, who had gone from the 17th starting position on the grid, thus attaining to fourth place ahead of Denis Hulme and Merzario, which thus directly received a World Championship point in his Formula 1 debut.

Message list

1 Jackie Stewart, Jean -Pierre Beltoise and Chris Amon each had a spare car available, with which they, however, no timed practice rounds rode and did not participate in the race.
