Background

Like last year, the Grand Prix of Argentina was held in January. Due to political disagreements, the race was initially canceled, but was then announced again shortly. The field was correspondingly low. Most teams competed with two cars.

Regarding the driver crews, there were some changes in comparison to the 1972 season to determine. The most notable news was the signing of Ronnie Peterson as a regular driver at Lotus alongside the reigning world champion Emerson Fittipaldi. Peterson's place in March was taken up by Jean -Pierre Jarier. It was decided to contest the entire season with only a single unit carriage, after the second factory driver last year, Niki Lauda to BRM was changed, where he was team mate of the coming of Ferrari Clay Regazzoni and the already established flagship driver Jean -Pierre Beltoise.

Race
