1979 Úrvalsdeild

The Icelandic Football Championship 1979 was the 68th season of the highest Icelandic Football League. The League began on 12 May in 1979 and ended with the last games on 16 September 1979.

It was attended by ten teams in the championship, which was held in a simple round-trip round. For the first time since 1955 again took five clubs from the capital Reykjavík part.

ÍB Vestmannaeyja won for the first time the championship.

UEFA Cup Playoff

Since the second and third- placed team were equal on points after the regular season, the start legitimate in the UEFA Cup 1980/81 team was determined in a playoff. Due to a draw in the first encounter, the game had to be repeated. Finally, ÍA Akranes prevailed.
