1989 Women's European Volleyball Championship
The European Women's Volleyball in 1989 was held from September 2 to 10 in the Federal Republic of Germany. The Games were held in Stuttgart, Sindelfingen, Hamburg and Karlsruhe. The Soviet Union won with a 3-1 in the finals against the GDR for the twelfth time the title.
Mode
The twelve participants were divided into the first round in two groups of six. The group winners and runners reached the semi-finals. The other teams played to the ranks of five to twelve.

By a 2:3 defeat against Romania, the West German national team failed to make the semi-finals.
Placement matches
The matches in the ranks one through eight took place in Stuttgart. The remaining placement matches were played in Sindelfingen. The Federal Republic of Germany played with Renate Riek, Gudrun Witte, Sigrid Terstegge, Karen Baumeister, Andrea Sauvigny, Gudula dust, Michaela Luckner, Nina Sawatzki, Stefani Legall, Sabine Nazarov, Susanne Schlarmann and Silke Meyer. The GDR played with grit Naumann, Ute Steppin, Dorte Techel, Christina Schultz, Susanne lame, Annette Heymann, Ines Pianka, Pietsch, Ariane Radfan, Katja Weimann, Brit Wiedemann and Kruger.

Qualification
The Federal Republic was set as host. The top three teams in the European championship in 1987 were also automatically qualified. These were the GDR as the defending champion, the Second Soviet Union and the Third Czechoslovakia.
Eighteen other teams played in June in two fours and two groups of five to eight other places in the finals.
