1998 South American Women's Football Championship

The Sudamericano Femenino 3 (South American Women's Football Championship) was held in the period 1 to 15 March 1998 in Argentina. It was played in Mar del Plata. The winner was the third time in Brazil. For the first time all ten members of CONMEBOL participated in the tournament. For Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay were the first games of the women's national team and the games against Brazil ended for Peru and Venezuela with the worst defeat in their countries game history. The 15:0 for Brazil against Peru is also the largest margin of victory of a South American team on a neutral court.

Mode

The ten teams were divided into two groups of five teams. Within the groups played each team once against each other. The group winners and runners reached the semi-finals. The semi-final winners reached the final. The South American champions qualified for the FIFA Women's World Cup 1999.

Brazil qualified directly for the World Cup of Women 1999. Argentina had relegation matches against Mexico contest and failed to qualify.
