Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether is a chemical compound from the group of glycol ether.
Production and representation
Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether can be obtained from ethylene oxide and n-butanol. The annual production in Europe in 1995 was about 90,000 tons.
Properties
Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether is a colorless liquid with a faint ethereal odor. It decomposes when heated, with acrid and irritating fumes and hydrogen are released.
Use
Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether is used as a solvent for printing inks, the diluent, and processing means for the production of coatings. It is also used as a lubricant in hydraulic fracturing.
Safety
The vapors of ethylene glycol monobutyl ether can form (61 ° C, ignition temperature 240 ° C flash point) with air to form an explosive mixture. It reacts violently with aluminum.
