Glycol ethers

Glycol ethers are a group of organic chemicals that are based on ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol as the base unit. These are used as solvents, especially in paints. These solvents typically have a higher boiling point, together with the favorable solvent properties of ethers and alcohols of lower molecular masses. The word " Cellosolve " was founded in 1924 as a United States trademark of Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corp. (later Union Carbide) for " Solvents for Gums, Resins, cellulose ester, and the like" ( " solvent for gums, resins, cellulose esters, and the like " ) registered.

Recent studies show that exposure to glycol ethers may be in communication with barely motile sperm in semen analysis, however, this effect is very controversial.

Glycol ethers

  • Ethylene glycol monomethyl ether ( methyl glycol, 2 -methoxyethanol, CH3OCH2CH2OH )
  • Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether ( ethyl glycol, 2- ethoxyethanol, CH3CH2OCH2CH2OH )
  • Ethylene glycol monopropyl (2- propoxyethanol, CH3CH2CH2OCH2CH2OH )
  • Ethylenglycolmonoisopropylether (2- isopropoxyethanol, ( CH3) 2CHOCH2CH2OH )
  • Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (2- butoxyethanol, CH3CH2CH2CH2OCH2CH2OH ), a widely used solvent, such as in paints, surface coatings, cleaning products and inks
  • Ethylene glycol monophenyl ether (2- phenoxyethanol, C6H5OCH2CH2OH )

Dialkyl

  • Ethylene glycol dimethyl ether ( dimethoxyethane, CH3OCH2CH2OCH3 ), an alternative to diethyl ether and tetrahydrofuran is used as solvent for polysaccharides, as a reagent and in organometallic chemistry as an electrolyte in lithium batteries.
  • Ethyleneglycoldiethylether ( Diethylglycol, diethoxy ethane, CH3CH2OCH2CH2OCH2CH3 )
  • Ethyleneglycoldibutylether ( Dibutoxyethan, CH3CH2CH2CH2OCH2CH2OCH2CH2CH2CH3 )
