2-chloropyridine is an organic compound that the heterocycles (more precisely, heteroaromatics ) counts. It consists of a pyridine ring which is substituted in the 2 - position with chlorine. The compound is isomeric to 3 -chloropyridine and 4 -chloropyridine.

Representation

In general, common electrophilic aromatic substitutions on pyridine or only with low yield are possible. Further would pyridine preferably substituted in the 3 - position and 2-chloropyridine would arise only as a by- product. The preparation of 2 -chloropyridine is possible, however, by reaction with molecular chlorine in the presence of catalytic amounts of palladium ( II) chloride.

Use

4 Azaphenothiazin is an important intermediate for the synthesis of active ingredients and can be prepared from 2-chloropyridine and 2- aminothiophenol.

By lithiation of 2 -chloro-pyridine can be converted to the organolithium compound which is used as starting compound for further pyridine derivatives, that are not accessible directly.
