2002–03 2. Bundesliga

In the 2nd Bundesliga 2002 /03 SC Freiburg reached, the 1st FC Cologne Eintracht Frankfurt and promotion to the Bundesliga. Two of the three Bundesliga relegation last season (Freiburg and Cologne) managed the direct promotion back to the Premier League, while the third relegated team (St. Pauli ) descent directly to the Regionalliga.

Rise

After completing the 1st FC Cologne discovered itself promoted already after 31 matches and has been classified as a decisive lead, lying, began a losing streak, which was initiated by the SC Freiburg with a 3-0 on Matchday 32 and lasted until the end of the season. The SC Freiburg supplanted the 1st FC Cologne even on the final day still top of the table, thus securing the second division championship.

Meanwhile lay Frankfurt, Mainz and Greuther Fürth since 28 Round with changing leadership behind the leading duo. The losers of the season were called Eintracht Braunschweig, FC St. Pauli and SV Waldhof Mannheim and SSV Reutlingen. Reutlingen reached in the season sporting 39 points, which would have been enough for the league, but got the club before the season six points for violations of the licensing process deducted.

While St. Pauli and Mannheim were firmly relegated before the last game, which placed the relegation zone just before the final day of Reutlingen and Braunschweig were able to reach the league yet. Before the last game continues Oberhausen, Karlsruhe and awls were relegation threatened.

Reutlingen had thereby achieve a victory against Eintracht Frankfurt and hope that Karlsruhe loses the last game against Fürth and Brunswick does not win.

For Braunschweig a win against Mainz 05 was a prerequisite. However, a recovery was not possible without a simultaneous defeat of competitors Oberhausen, Karlsruhe or awls. Although Oberhausen lost the last game against Ahlen, but would be a high victory Brunswick have been necessary to avoid relegation.
