2002 FIFA World Cup qualification

The qualifying matches for the World Cup the men in 2002 were held to 14 November 2001 of 28 March 2000. 193 of 204 countries (all members of FIFA ) were started in the World Cup qualifiers, only 29 teams remained at the end of qualifying left. France as the defending champion, Japan and South Korea set to host, completed the field of finalists. All qualification options include either the Championship or the Cup system.

Qualification mode

Qualifying for the World Cup in 2002, began on 28 March 2000. From a total of 198 reported associations finally started 193 teams in the World Cup qualifiers, only 29 teams remained on 16 November 2001 left. France qualified automatically as defending champions, South Korea and Japan to host the final round of 32. Myanmar withdrew, Guinea and Guyana were suspended by FIFA.

In six zones, the continental federations of the FIFA, the 29 participants were determined by 774 qualifiers, which in addition to South Korea, Japan and France were the starting field of the World Cup finals:

Europe / 13 UEFA had direct starting places plus defending champion France in the World Cup. The 50 teams were distributed among five groups of six and four groups of five. The winners of the nine qualifying groups for the World Cup went to South Korea and Japan. The nine runners-up played on 10./14. November 2001 in five play-off games ( return match ) Accompany it with the Asia - third five other World Cup finalists.

South America / CONMEBOL had four direct starting places. Ten teams played against each other with each return round, the top four were directly qualified for the World Cup. Africa / CAF, had five places at the World Cup. 50 teams determined in 25 play-off games ( return match ), the 25 participants in the second round. The 25 teams were divided into five groups of five, of which the group winners qualified for the World Cup itself.

Asia / AFC, had two direct launch sites plus the two hosts South Korea and Japan. In the first round 40 teams played in ten groups of four. The ten group winners were in the second round ( 16 August-19 October 2001). The ten teams were divided into two groups of five, the group winners qualified for the World Cup. The two runners-up accounted for in a return match, who was allowed to play against a European group runners-up a further qualified.

Oceania / OFC had no direct launch site. Therefore, it was possible that none of the 10 teams from the countries participating around the fifth continent in the World Cup. Ten teams were divided into two groups of five. The two group winners determined in a return match the oceanic representative for the play-off against the fifth placed South America.

European Zone / UEFA

Game Mode: Played in nine groups (5 groups of 6 and 4 groups of 5 teams), each against all, in home and away matches. The nine group winners qualify for the finals of 2002. Runner-up played together with the Asia - third (Iran) in five pairings with the return game five more seats. France qualified automatically as defending champions for the World Cup finals.

Level after the last game: The nine group winners Russia, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Croatia, Spain, Italy and England were directly qualified for the World Cup. The last five European Cup participants have been identified in relegation matches: Germany ( from Ukraine ), Belgium ( against the Czech Republic ), Turkey ( against Austria ), Slovenia ( against Romania ) and Ireland ( against Iran).

North, Central American and Caribbean Zone / CONCACAF

  • The two group winners of the central zone qualified for the CONCACAF second round, The two runners-up for the inter-zone qualifiers.
  • The three group winners of the Caribbean zone qualified for the CONCACAF second round, the three runners-up for the inter-zone qualifiers.
  • Together with Canada denied the five runners-up the play-offs of the inter-zone qualifiers with home and away matches. The three winners were qualified for the CONCACAF second round.
  • The CONCACAF second round contest the eight qualified teams from the Central Zone and Caribbean zone, along with the four seeded teams in United States, Mexico, Jamaica and Costa Rica. It was played in three groups of four. The top two teams from each group then challenged the CONCACAF final round.
  • The first three teams from the CONCACAF final round qualified for the World Cup finals in 2002.
