  • CAS Number: 9029-68-9

Steroid- 21-hydroxylase ( CYP21 ) is an enzyme that is involved in the biosynthesis of steroid hormones cortisol and aldosterone. It catalyzes the oxidation of the carbon atom 21 in steroid which is necessary in the formation of these hormones.

21- hydroxylase is formed over the gene CYP21A2. A defect in this gene causes a disturbance in the formation of the enzyme, which leads to congenital adrenal syndrome type 3.

Catalyzed reactions

AH2 O2 ⇒ A H2O

Pregnenolone is converted to 21- hydroxypregnenolone.

AH2 O2 ⇒ A H2O

17α - hydroxypregnenolone is oxidized to 17α ,21- Dihydroxypregnenolon.

AH2 O2 ⇒ A H2O

17α - hydroxyprogesterone is converted to 11- deoxycortisol.

AH2 O2 ⇒ A H2O

11β - hydroxyprogesterone is hydroxylated, corticosterone produced.
