The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI; German National Center for Biotechnology Information ) in Bethesda, Maryland was founded in 1988 as a central institution for data processing and data storage in molecular biology. It is a sub-organization of the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM ), which in turn is a sub-organization of the National Institutes of Health ( NIH).

About Web interface provides the NCBI access to important DNA, RNA and protein databases ( eg RefSeq ) at your disposal, further a taxonomy search function to search for data on specific species, a database with summaries of scientific literature (PubMed ) and various standard software in bioinformatics. Internally, the data flow is controlled by means of storing and organizing data in ASN.1.
