National Center for Biotechnology Information
The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI; German National Center for Biotechnology Information ) in Bethesda, Maryland was founded in 1988 as a central institution for data processing and data storage in molecular biology. It is a sub-organization of the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM ), which in turn is a sub-organization of the National Institutes of Health ( NIH).
About Web interface provides the NCBI access to important DNA, RNA and protein databases ( eg RefSeq ) at your disposal, further a taxonomy search function to search for data on specific species, a database with summaries of scientific literature (PubMed ) and various standard software in bioinformatics. Internally, the data flow is controlled by means of storing and organizing data in ASN.1.
Prior similar portals such as the ExPASy server in Switzerland, it is the world's most important point for molecular biological data and bioinformatics solutions.
