( 23988 ) Maungakiekie is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on 2 September 1999 by the British astronomer Ian P. Griffin at Stardome Observatory Auckland in New Zealand ( IAU code 467 ).

The asteroid was named after the Māori name for the extinct volcanic cone One Tree Hill in Auckland, which is an important memorial for many New Zealanders.
