26th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (2nd Hungarian)

The 26th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS ( Hungarian No. 2 ), similar to the 25th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS " Hunyadi ," was set up on 23 December 1944, the military training area Neuhammer in Silesia. The Division in early January was postponed for further training and equipment after Sieddratz. The Division mainly comprised former members of the Hungarian army and Hungarian nationals who were recruited for the Division, together. In contrast to SS formations, which were composed of Germans or members of the so-called " Nordic race " led the Division the name: Waffen- SS instead of the ranks was also a weapons - prefixed.

The two Hungarian SS divisions formed in February 1945, the XVII. Weapons Army Corps ( Hungarian ), which, however, never came on the establishment phase out. The Soviet winter offensive in Silesia prevented the complete list of Division, which defected to the West, where they are the beginning of May 1945 resulted in the room Frankenburg American troops.
