( 3551 ) Verenia is an asteroid from Amor - type, which was discovered on September 12, 1983 by R. Scott Dunbar at Mount Palomar.

The asteroid is named after the first Vestal, which had been consecrated by the legendary Roman king Numa Pompilius. ( 3551 ) Verenia is the first of the Amor -type asteroid ( 4) Vesta was placed in a group of asteroids.

A close flyby ( 3551 ) Verenia was planned for the lunar exploration probe Clementine in October 2005.
