( 3838 ) Epona is an asteroid from the Apollo - type. This refers to a group of asteroids whose orbits extend partially within the orbit of Mars. Due to the large orbital eccentricity Epona even crosses the orbit of Mercury.

( 3838 ) Epona was discovered on November 27, 1986 by Alain Maury at Mount Palomar.
The origin of the name is unclear.
