The live recordings were made at performances in the Fillmore East in New York City ( 2 to 7 June 1970), the Forum in Inglewood, near Los Angeles ( 26 to 28 June 1970) and the Auditorium in Chicago ( July 5, 1970 ). 4 Way Street was released as a double album, reaching # 1 on the U.S. LP charts.

The 1992 published CD version contains four bonus tracks (one each by David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young), all of which do not come from the CSN (Y) repertoire, but the previous band and solo activities of the artist, but were played during the CSNY concerts in 1970.
