(45 ) Eugenia is an asteroid of the main asteroid belt, which was discovered on June 27, 1857 by Hermann Mayer Salomon Goldschmidt.

It was named in honor of the celestial bodies Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III.

With a diameter of 215 km Eugenia is one of the largest asteroids of the main belt. It has a dark, carbon-rich surface with an albedo of 0.04. The low density of 1.12 g/cm3 indicates that the heavenly bodies is likely to be a rubble pile, a loose accumulation of dust and rocks.

Monde

On 6 October 1999, a natural satellite was discovered at Eugenia and named after the Little Prince by Antoine de Saint- Exupery Petit -Prince. It is a 13 km large body that orbits Eugenia at a distance of 1,184 km in the 4,766 days. After Dactyl, this was the second discovery of an asteroid moon.

In March 2007, the discovery of a second moon was announced. The object S/2004 (45 ) 1 received the provisional name, was discovered on images taken in 2004.
