( 52293 ) Mommsen is one of the major outer asteroid belt, which was discovered by the German astronomer frankness Börngen and Lutz D. Schmadel on October 12, 1990 at Tautenburg Observatory (IAU code 033) in the Thuringian Forest Tautenburger.

The asteroid was named on 1 May 2003 at the suggestion of sincerity Börngen after the German historian Theodor Mommsen, who is considered one of the greatest classicist of the 19th century. In 1902 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his work Roman History.
