( 54509 ) YORP is a near-Earth asteroid that was discovered on 3 August 2000 by the team of the Lincoln Institute for Research near-Earth asteroids in Socorro. By measuring the rate of rotation of this asteroid for the first time was the YORP effect can be observed and proven. Through him, the rotation period of the asteroid increases by 2.0 (± 0.2 ) × 10 ⁻ ⁴ deg / day ⁻ ². Simulations of asteroids suggest that he will be in the next 35 million years ago in a stable orbit around the sun. Until then, he will have achieved a rotation period of about 20 seconds. The forces that occur during this extremely high rotational speed, can then lead to the shape of the asteroid change, or that he breaks a result. The simulations ruled out to that can be the increase of the rotation period explained by the proximity of the flybys of the Earth.
