6th October Bridge

The 6th October Bridge is a motorway-like high street in the Egyptian capital Cairo. It connects the city with the about 20 km from Cairo Airport. The bridge was opened after a construction period of 30 years in 1996. The most important section is one of its two crossings of the Nile. This bridge, built with the participation of German Dywidag is 141 meters long and has 2 × 5 lanes. Overall, the bridge is 12.5 km long. The name of the bridge refers to the day of the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War on 6 October 1973.

The bridge is traveled daily by more than half a million people. The journey from one end to the other takes up to 45 minutes.

During the protests in Egypt in February 2011, the disputes ranged from Tahrir Square to the bridge ramp on the east side of the Nile.
