(8588) Avosetta

( 8588 ) Avosetta is an asteroid of the inner main belt, which was discovered on 24 September 1960 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten couple and Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld. The discovery came as part of the Palomar - Leiden Survey, which recorded by Tom Gehrels with the 120 - inch Oschin Schmidt telescope at Palomar Observatory field plates at Leiden University were screened.

( 8588 ) Avosetta is named after the Pied Avocet, whose scientific name is Recurvirostra avosetta. At the time of designation of the asteroid on February 2, 1999, the Avocet was at the Dutch Red List of Threatened Species. The first letter of the asteroid ( 8585 ) to ( 8600 ) form the phrase Per aspera ad astra.
