( 9679 ) Crutzen is an asteroid of the inner main belt, which was discovered on 24 September 1960 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten couple and Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld. The discovery came as part of the Palomar - Leiden Survey, which recorded by Tom Gehrels with the 120 - inch Oschin Schmidt telescope at Palomar Observatory field plates at Leiden University were screened.

The asteroid is named after the Dutch meteorologist Paul J. Crutzen, who won in 1995 along with Mario J. Molina and Frank Sherwood Rowland for work on the chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere, particularly the formation and decomposition of ozone, the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. The naming of the asteroid on 11 November 2000 at the suggestion of Fröger Willem, a Dutch astronomer who works in Argentina. After Mario J. Molina, the asteroid of the inner main belt ( 9680 ) Molina was named on the same day, according to Frank Sherwood Rowland also on 11 November 2000, the asteroid of the outer main belt ( 9681 ) Sherwoodrowland.
