A Latin Dictionary

A Latin Dictionary ( German: A Latin dictionary ) is a common English language lexicon of the Latin language. It appears in the Oxford University Press, was released in 1879 and is one of the most popular Latin dictionaries in the English language. According to his publishers Charlton T. Lewis and Charles Short, it is also known as Lewis and Short.

History

The emergence of the Latin Dictionary is from its full title A Latin Dictionary: Founded on Andrews ' Edition of Freund's Latin Dictionary: Revised, Enlarged, and in Great Part Rewritten by Charlton T. Lewis Ph.D. ( " A Latin Lexicon: Based on Andrews ' edition of the Latin dictionary from friend: Improved, expanded and largely rewritten by Dr. Charlton T. Lewis" ) summarized. It is based on an EA Andrews in 1850 the completed translation of the dictionary of the Latin language by Wilhelm friend from the Germans. This Latin Dictionary was edited after Andrews ' death of Wilhelm friend himself, then, until it came from Henry Drisler among the editors and Charlton T. Lewis, Charles Short in its present form. Occurs only Lewis' name that the full title, is that short only the entries of the letter A machined ( 216 pages ), while Lewis worked on the remaining letters (B to Z, 1803 pages).

Published in 1890 by Lewis an abridged version of the dictionary under the title An Elementary Latin Dictionary, which was intended for pupils and students.

Importance

Until the appearance of the Oxford Latin Dictionary ( OLD) was the Latin Dictionary of Lewis and Short Latin the only English Dictionary larger circumference. From 1933 to 1982, it was also created in Oxford with the OLD modeled after the Oxford English Dictionary, a contemporary, based on modern text output lexicon. Since the OLD but not containing late Roman and Christian writers, is the Latin Dictionary of Lewis and Short is still widespread, and is mainly used by medievalists and Renaissance researchers preferred.
