A. Charles Muller

Albert Charles Muller ( born 1953 in Long Iceland, New York) is a professor at the Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, Faculty of Letters, the University of Tokyo (东京 大学, Tōkyō daigaku ). He is particularly known for his translations of Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian literature from East Asia into English.

Muller studied literature, East Asian religions and Korean at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His doctoral dissertation on the literature of different countries and theories of literary criticism to acquire a Ph.D. in comparative literature was adopted there in 1993. From 1994 to 1997 he worked as an assistant professor at the Japanese Toyo Gakuen University (东洋 学园 大学, Toyo Gakuen daigaku ), from 1997 to 2008 as a full professor. In 2008 he moved to the University of Tokyo.

Muller's research focuses on general science of religion, Chinese Philosophy, Indian Philosophy, Buddhist Studies, and here in particular of Korean Buddhism. Very intense, he has explored the writings of the Korean monk scholars Wonhyo (元 晓, 617-686 ) and, starting from the common East Asian variant of the Buddhist philosophy of Yogācāra.

Particularly outstanding are Mullers initiatives and contributions to numerous digitization projects in the field of East Asian Buddhism, including the now famous, begun in 1986, Digital Dictionary of Buddhism, an ongoing glossary of many terms of Buddhism. In addition, Muller founder and editor of the Information Network for Buddhism watchers Buddhist Scholars Information Network, under the name of H- Buddhism part of H -Net was founded in 2001.
