A. P. Carter

Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter (* December 15 1891 in Maces Springs, Virginia; † November 7, 1960 in Maces Springs ) was an American country singer

A. P. Carter learned as a child's first folk songs from his mother. With three other family members, he later formed a gospel quartet. His living he earned as a traveling representative for fruit trees. On one of his trips he met Sara Dougherty know that, like himself, had a penchant for traditional American music.

On May 18, 1915, the two married. During the next few years, sang and played music the couple predominantly in the private sphere. Mid -1920s, joined them Maybelle Carter, born Addington, to, who was married to a brother APs. The Carter Family was so complete within a short time the most successful country music vocal group of the first half of the 20th century. In addition to recording sessions and concert tours, the traditional treasure of songs detection was a main concern of AP Carter. He regularly roamed rural districts and asked the population according to their music. So he carried along by and by hundreds of songs, many of which were recorded by the Carter Family on record.

1943, the group disbanded after his divorce from AP and Sara. A. P. pulled up to the year 1952 back from the music business. Then he formed together with his ex-wife and their daughter Janette the Carter Family a second time. The big success came from though, and so they went their separate ways in 1956. A. P. Carter died four years later in his hometown of Maces Springs, Virginia.

In 1970, A. P. Carter added to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
