Abbotsholme School

The school is located on the south western border of Derbyshire near the river Dove. It was founded in October 1889 by Cecil Reddie ( 1858-1932 ) along with Muirhead and Cassels, and was one of the schools of the newer Landerziehungsheim movement; it soon became a synonym for the " New Education ".

Reddie envisioned a school that was to form the whole person - both mental and physical as well as the characterological systems. He founded Abbotsholme deliberately contrary to the official school. The Classical Languages in Abbotsholme played a subordinate role, more important were the modern languages , history and the natural sciences. The school day was in classroom work (morning) and freer activities (afternoon) divided. The freer activities included not only sports, excursions and artistic activities also working on the field, in the garden or in the workshop.

The school has about 295 students today.
