ABCG1

ABCG1 is one of two proteins in the cell membrane of mammals, cholesterol inflated with consumption of ATP from the cell where it floats on the membrane and is picked up by HDL particles ( reverse cholesterol transport). In murine endothelial cells without ABCG1 oxidation products of cholesterol accumulate. In macrophages and monocytes ABCG1 plays the main role in cholesterol transport. In other cells, this is done by ABCA 1.

In type 2 diabetes patients is the expression of ABCG1 reduced in monocytes, which contributes to atherosclerosis, like activity of the enzyme 12/15-Lipoxygenase. However, overexpression via translocation of phosphatidylserine and caspase 3 activation in apoptosis.
