Abdul Cader Shahul Hameed

Abdul Cader Shahul Hameed ( born April 10, 1928 in Kurugoda, Ceylon, † September 3, 1999 in Colombo ) was a Sri Lankan politician.

Biography

Hameed, a member of the United National Party ( UNP), was appointed foreign minister in the government of Prime Minister Junius Richard Jayawardene in 1977. This office he retained even after Jayawardene after a constitutional reform in 1978 became president, the cabinet of Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa until 1989.

As Premadasa in 1989 became president, Hameed was part of a Government reshuffle Minister of Higher Education in the government of Prime Minister Dingiri Banda Wijetunga. In this role, he was head of the government side in peace talks with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE). However, these talks broke down and the fighting between government forces and the LTTE, which fought for the independence of the Tamil dominated North and East of Sri Lanka from the rest of the island, began again.

As Wijetunga 1993 after the assassination of President Premadasa of Sri Lanka was, was his re- appointment as foreign minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Even after the UNP in 1994 lost their power in the general election, Hameed took retains a key role in the efforts within the party in the solution for an end to the ethnic conflict in the destroyed by civil war.
