Abdul Halim Khaddam

Abd al- Halim Khaddam (Arabic عبد الحليم خدام, DMG ʿ Abd al - Halim Haddam, Abdul Halim Khaddam also; born September 15, 1932 in Baniyas ) was President and Vice-President ( 1984 - (June 10 - July 17, 2000 ) 2000, 2000-2005) of Syria.

Life

Abd al- Halim Khaddam was born on 15 September 1932 in Baniyas (Syria ). He was one of the few Sunni Muslims, in the top of the Alawite -dominated Syrian governance. Khaddam has long been known as loyal to Hafez al -Assad. He was Foreign Minister from 1970 to 1984 and Vice President of 1984 to 2000. President of Syria he was from 10 June to 17 July 2000 between the death of Hafiz and the election whose son Bashar al -Assad. At that time there were rumors that Khaddam would try to take power in Damascus.

As Bashar al -Assad held the office of president, Khaddam was Vice President again. He and other members of the " old guard " but gradually lost their former influence. In this context, he announced on 6 June 2005 on the Baath Party Congress for his resignation. After the resignation, he moved to Paris, ostensibly to write his memoirs. After an open break with the Syrian government he lives there in exile. He founded the same year in Belgium, the opposition National Salvation Front.
