The Abelitz is a 20 km long river, as it's called Deep in East Friesland, of Marienhafe to its confluence with the Old Greetsieler Sieltief. The name is as tautological composition of the Proto-Germanic word apa ( = water ) interpreted with the Frisian Last appellative ( = flow of water).

It is 20 kilometers long, up to 12 meters wide, navigable up to 1.50 meters deep and with boats with a draft of up to 1.20 meters with a maximum of 5 km / h. The riparian areas of Abelitz are often overgrown with reeds and close to nature. There are several tributaries, the small islands encircle or pass through wetlands. The river is rich in fish and known as a good fishing spot.

The bird life on and around the Abelitz is diverse. During the breeding season are encouraged to correspondingly considerate behavior of water walkers and anglers.

With Moordorf the Abelitz is connected through the Abelitz - Moordorf channel.
