Aberdyfi

Aberdyfi ( Welsh: estuary of the River Dyfi ) is a municipality (community) in the County of Gwynedd in Wales. Also widespread is the anglicised form of the name Aberdovey.

The village is located in the central coast of Cardigan Bay, on the southern edge of the Snowdonia National Park.

The name is the first time in 1156, founded Aberdyfi Castle occupied. The still existing mound ( moth ), where the former castle was built, but not located on the territory of the municipality, but on the opposite side of the mouth of the Dyfi in neighboring Ceredigion County. 1216 called Llywelyn from Iorwerth at Aberdyfi Castle a meeting of the Welsh princes. At least since the mid-16th century was located in the present village of Aberdyfi a small fishing port with first few residential buildings. Later, the port gained importance through the shipment of lead ore mined in the region and in particular in the mid-19th century through the shipment of slate (see slate industry in Wales).

From the Victorian era up to the present Aberdyfi is popular as a seaside resort and retirement home. Among the most prominent residents who took up residence in Aberdyfi at an advanced age, was one of the writers couple Oliver Onions and Berta Ruck. 1941 founded the German emigre Kurt Hahn together with British educators and German immigrant Bernhard Zimmermann in Aberdyfi the first branch of the organization Outward Bound.

Currently, tourism is the main economic activities in the community, a significant proportion of residential development make holiday houses. According to the census in 2001 had more than 47 % of permanent residents over three years knowledge of the Welsh language.
