The construction of the castle was begun as in Flint Castle, Rhuddlan Castle in 1277. The total investment is reminiscent of Rhuddlan, because here a gatehouse stands at one of the corners of the rectangular courtyard of the Castle ( The usual position is in the middle of one of the sides of the curtain walls ).

As in Harlech Castle towers flanking the entrance are semicircular. To the main castle existed a second annular wall.
