Abistamenes

Sabiktas ( † after 333 BC ) was a governor of Alexander the Great.

Sabiktas was a Persian, and probably originated in Cappadocia. He was appointed in the summer of 333 BC by Alexander the satrap of Cappadocia on Taurus ( Südkappadokien ), in place of the fallen of the Granicus Mithrobuzanes. In this position, Sabiktas but could not hold and was probably sold shortly after the Battle of Issus by a Persian counter-offensive from Cappadocia.

Therefore, this province remained outside the Empire conquered by Alexander, in which especially the satrap of Pontic Cappadocia ( Nordkappadokien ) Ariarathes, could establish an independent rule.

Sabiktas name is handed down by Arrian ( Anabasis 2.4.2 ), which has been widely adopted in the literature as persons name. Curtius Rufus ( 3.4.1 ), however, called him Abistamenes.
