Above the Ruins

Above the Ruins is a British post-punk group that was founded in 1984 by Tony Wakeford.

History

Wakeford founded Above the Ruins after his departure from the formation Death in June. The group stayed for the short period of its existence, and later controversial, partly because Wakefords former member of the far-right National Front, on the other hand, because of their participation in the licensed from National Front Label White Noise Records Sampler No Surrender! , On the including the white power band Skrewdriver was represented.

Shortly after the release of their debut album, Songs of the Wolf and the sampler No Surrender! solved Wakeford Above the Ruins and called on the band Sol Invictus to life. In later years Wakeford denied any connection between Above the Ruins and the right scene to Sol Invictus; for a time he even denied, even ever at Above the Ruins (whose publications do not contain information about the group ) to have been involved. In contrast, he admitted in at least one interview that Gareth Smith of No Remorse had been involved in early Sol Invictus recordings, he is but because of his " connections" (meaning it probably No Remorses involvement in the far-right scene, from the Wakeford is began to distance ) to phase out his new project urged.

Stylistically offered Above the Ruins a mixture of post-punk and dark wave, the early Death in June as well as the later Sol Invictus debut album not dissimilar. The texts topics such as patriotism, anti- Marxism, anti- egalitarianism and anti- multiculturalism, particularly explicit in the play progress. For some pieces Wakeford had recourse at the poetry collection 1957: Before the Storm by Paul Comben (1984 ), which were even more radical content through its slight changes. The relatively poor recording quality of their publications (possibly deliberately chosen ) anonymity of the band members and the political connections limited awareness of Above the Ruins on a niche, despite a 1995 published edition of Songs of the Wolf on CD.
