Sol Invictus (Band)

Sol Invictus is an English neofolk band that was founded in 1987 by Tony Wakeford.

Band History

1987 Tony Wakeford returned after the dissolution of his band project Above the Ruins and his renunciation of the right scene with Sol Invictus back into the music business. He was assisted by Ian Read, and (from the second album ) by Karl Blake of Lemon Kittens and Shock Headed Peters. The music of Sol Invictus was a mixture of folk -acoustic, experimental and electronic sounds. This sound marked the first three albums, Against the Modern World, In the Jaws of the Serpent and Lex Talionis.

In 1991, Ian Read left the band and founded Fire & Ice. Wakeford moved with Sol Invictus more in the direction of a "dark" folk - variant (or " folk noir " in your own words ) and always brought new and changing musicians with. According to different sounded the following albums by Sol Invictus; although the influence of European folk music was always in the foreground, the accent shifted in the direction of neo-classical times or progressive rock.

Since the 1990s, Wakeford often shuttled between his residences London / England and France, back and forth, which is why many recordings with French guest musicians ( Stephane Ruiz, Eric Roger ) emerged. Karl Blake, Wakefords musical companion since 1988, left the band after the album The Devil's Steed (2005 ) as well as Eric Roger. Andrew King, Producer Reeve "M" Malka and the musicians Caroline Jago and Lesley Malone now certain musical appearance of the band.

In March 2008, the contract with the German label Auerbach Media, a subsidiary of Prophecy Productions was announced. The first release of Sol Invictus to Auerbach, the vinyl single The Bad Luck Bird, was published in May 2010, and in subsequent editions of the entire studio work of the band.

After the announcement of an interview Andrew King had given the New Right magazine Tyr and in which that among other things, the loss of "cultural superiority of the West " complained to Sol Invictus separated in June 2011 by King. In the same month they announced the divestment of the label and distribution Cold Spring Records.

Texts

Recurring themes of Wakefords texts were critique of modernity (particularly its prevailing materialism and egalitarianism ) and Christianity. Instead of creating counter-proposals, he propagated an elitist, isolationist withdrawal from the world. Programmatically, here are titles such as In My Garden or The House Above the World. Another topic was the " European heritage " that Wakeford looked threatened primarily by the U.S. consumerism.

Several reviewers have also repeatedly referred to the song title, which can be interpreted as references to right-wing thinkers and organizations: Against the Modern World ( = " collection reflects the modern world " ) and Amongst the Ruins ( = " Men among the Ruins " ) to the philosopher Julius Evola, Death of the West ( = " the Decline of the West" ) to the cultural critic Oswald Spengler ( on the already a line of text in Death in June song refers Nothing Changes), Long Live Death ( = " Viva La Muerte " ) to the adopted by the Spanish Foreign Legion battle cry of the Phalangists. Although Wakeford confessed to have served for song titles Evola, this would not be understood as a tribute ( as Wakeford in now deleted forum on its website Tursa.com ).

From Wakeford even mentioned as inspiration or in its publications quoted philosophers and writers include Friedrich Nietzsche, Albert Camus, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, J. G. Ballard and film director Luis Bunuel. On newer albums to also provide enhanced personal and autobiographical texts.
