Abraham Dowdney

Abraham Dowdney ( born October 31, 1841 in Youghal, Ireland, † 10 December 1886 in New York City ) was an American politician. He represented in the 1885 and 1886, the New York State in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Dowdney Abraham was born during the Victorian era in Youghal. He and his widowed mother emigrated in 1853 to the United States and settled in New York City. He attended private schools. He then worked as a plumber ( plumber ). Later he worked in construction. During the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army. He served as a Captain in the years 1862 and 1863 in the 132nd Regiment of New York Volunteer Infantry. During this time he took part in the fighting in Virginia and North Carolina. After the war he married. The family of his wife led a successful business. In the following years he worked in upstate New York in railway construction. Between 1882 and 1885 he had presided over the Board of Public School Trustees of New York City. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1884 for the 49th Congress Dowdney was in the twelfth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Waldo Hutchins on March 4, 1885. Dowdney renounced in 1886 on a bid again, but died before the end of his tenure at the effects of a stroke on December 10, 1886 in New York City. His body was then buried at the Calvary Cemetery in Long Iceland City.
