Abraham Moses Luncz

Abraham Moses Luncz (Hebrew אברהם משה לונץ; born December 2, 1854 in Kaunas, Russian Empire, † April 14, 1918 in Jerusalem) was a Jewish scholar, author and publisher.

Life and work

In Kaunas born (Eng. chewing outdated ), it came at the age of 15 years with his parents to Jerusalem, where she learned on the yeshiva " Ez Chaim " (Eng. tree of life ) and became, among other things in secular studies the literature of the Haskalah the Jewish Enlightenment, teaches.

Together with Israel Dow Frumkin, he founded the first public library in Jerusalem, which they named after Moses Montefiore, which was closed a short time later. In 1873 he began Articles in Frumkin's literary magazine " Habazeleth " publish, in which he sharply criticized the Chaluka, organized collection of funds for the Jewish colonization of Palestine and the responsible for the collection Gabbaim. On the other hand, he stood at the Jerusalem Jewish community against the attacks of Heinrich Graetz. He wrote several geographical writings, 1876, he wrote a Hebrew leader of the city of Jerusalem with the title - " Netiwot Wejeruschalajm Zion " (Eng. routes in Zion and Jerusalem).

Luncz went blind at the age of 24 years and, together with Dr. Koisewski an Institution for the Blind in Jerusalem. He owned a printing press, with whom he published the work of several Palestinian scholar, among the first to Estori Farchis Kaftor waPerach (Eng. "button and flower " ) and Josef Schwarz's Twu'ot were Haaretz (English " harvest "). In 1904 he printed a new edition of the Jerusalem Talmud with commentary and introduction.

Until his death in 1918, he worked on the drafting and issuing of geographical material on Palestine. His work contains a wealth of information concerning the activities of the Jews of Jerusalem and their hometowns. He was buried on the Mount of Olives.
