Absheron peninsula

Geographical location

Absheron ( Azerbaijani Absheron, from the Persian city of salt water; Russian Апшерон / Apsheron ) is a 60 km long peninsula on the Caspian Sea.

On the peninsula, Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, as well as parts of the Absheron Rayon.

The peninsula is a known oil extraction area. The industrial oil production began here in 1870. Apsheron is also rich in salt lakes, mineral springs and mud volcanoes. An unusual attraction is the natural gas fire at Yanardag.

1918 existed on the peninsula the Zentralkaspische dictatorship, a supported of Great Britain and Northern Ireland state.
