Koa (Acacia koa )

The Koa (Acacia koa ) is a plant in the legume family ( Fabaceae ). It occurs only on the Hawaiian Islands and is on some of them the second most common Art

Use

The wood is used for the construction of furniture, traditional outrigger canoes, souvenirs and musical instruments. In the latter case, use is made especially for e- guitar interesting, flamed pattern and the balanced sound that blends the warmth of rosewood with the bright tone of the mahogany. The first Ukuleles were prepared from the still Koa exclusive. The general properties are very similar to mahogany ( "the Hawaiian mahogany ").

The first description of Acacia koa was made in 1854 by the U.S. botanist Asa Gray in C. Wilkes: United States Exploring Expedition, Volume 1, pp. 480-481.

By some botanists varieties are distinguished within the species Acacia koa:

  • Acacia koa var lanaiensis rock
  • Acacia koa var latifolia ( Benth. ) H.St.John
