The Academy of Performing Arts Bratislava ( Vysoká škola múzických Umění in Bratislava ( VŠMU ) ) is a public university in the Slovak capital Bratislava.

The Academy, the first consisted of a College of Music and Drama, was divided in 1953. The first rector was Ján Strelec ( 1893-1975 ). The current rector is the academic painter Milan Rašla.

The University is currently (2013 ) consists of three faculties:

  • Music and dance
  • Spectacle
  • Film and Television

Well-known teacher at the university were Alexander Moyzes, Ján Cikker, Frico Kafenda, Eugen Suchoň, Václav Talich

Partly also courses in English and German language are offered, so that foreign language students can participate in the training as part of the Erasmus program. In addition, there is still a library.

Accommodation

The three faculties are divided into two listed buildings in Bratislava. The building in the Zochová ulica is since 1986 the seat, it was by architect Ignatius Alpár from 1895 and was originally a French grammar school. Earlier it was taught at several places such as at the Štúrova, Kapitulská and Panenská.

In the city it is located in the building of the medieval Universitas Istropolitana.

Cooperations

The Academy for a long time been working closely with the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts Brno, the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, as well as with the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, the University of Music Carl Maria von Weber Dresden and the National Music Academy of Ukraine Peter Tchaikovsky.

Through the opening in 1989, the cooperation has been greatly enhanced, as with art academies in France, Norway and Finland.
